Having missed round 2 due to illness, it was great to get back to my preparation races with my new team mate and friend Abbi on Sunday. This was Abbi’s first mountainbike race in team colours, after the closing of the cross season, and great to have her with me.
Round 3 is probably the muddiest so far this year in terms of conditions and temperatures were freezing standing on the start line. The one thing that excited me is that I was astride my Bianchi for the first time this season.
As this is all still training for things to come, both Abbi and myself elected to ride in the open womens category instead of Juniors and youth, to hopefully make us work harder against the stronger and more experienced competitors, and to motivate each other when the going gets tough.
Not the best of starts for me. I was bogged down going up the start straight; however I managed to get past 2 riders on the way up it. In a snap shot the course was tough, not that much climbing, but some tricky tight corners, plenty of rocks and roots and of course the slabs. The first lap is always a fast lap; people breathing down your neck, shouting they’re coming past, but they don’t because they’re not fast enough.
After the first lap I was back to fourth place but 3rd was not too far in front of me. A quick look behind and found Abbi a few yards back so good start for her.
My aim for the race was to complete it without any ‘offs’ and to regain a little confidence. Not the best course for that, but never the less I completed my mission and added another podium to my seasons tally.
Before the race started I had gauged my position, and I was right! In addition I managed the whole course with no offs, although I managed to catch sight of quite a few. I was totally over the moon with my fantastic 3 rd place in this extremely fast category……………its a going to be a great season..
Abbi had a sensational ride in her first senior category race following me home to a wonderful 4 th place and a great asset to the team.
Once again both Abbi and myself are only the riders and must thank the fantastic team we ride for in WXC World Racing and its sponsors for all the support during this epic battle, and for cleaning bike afterwards as usual.
