Giving Something Back…

by Elaine Abonal March 21, 2016

2016 is going to be about self improvement and growing as a surfer, soul, entrepreneur, brand ambassador and all around person for me. I believe there’s always something new to learn and the only real riches you can carry with you are those that are not material. It was weird and hard for me to let go of last year, simply because I’ve gotten so comfortable with everything and stayed there. But I also realized that I wasn’t growing and not challenging myself anymore and focused on other people and situations I couldn’t control instead of myself.

I’ve been based in La Union earlier this year for my Surfista Travels Camps and will celebrate our 4 th year anniversary this February! I’m so proud of the number of Surfistas we’ve had in the past year and since the beginning. I also feel like I need to do something outside of surfing that is for myself and for my soul but still be related to what I love – the ocean. So I volunteered for Humpback Whale Research north of the Philippines for a month, where I get to live on a remote island to study the behaviour of the whales. I’m super excited and nervous at the same time, since I don’t really know what to expect or what I’m getting myself into but I’ve been wanting to do this since I started Surfista (although I couldn’t then because I was just starting the business). I’ve also said I loved dolphins and whales and have always been curious, so this will be my chance to learn more about them and even help them, so that I can have a deeper relationship and knowledge about the ocean. I surf all the time and the ocean is such a big part of my life and I know there is so much more about it than the surface.

I won’t have much signal or access to electricity and not really allowed to post photos until after the whole experience, but I can’t wait to share with you all what I learn! It will be an amazing experience for sure.

When I get back, I plan to get a certification for my surfing and continue to live my island life in Siargao. I’ll write more about it then and feel free to join my camps and visit!! Beautiful things take time in this world but you also have to seize it since it’s all going by so fast. Hopefully though, whether time goes slow or fast for you, for us, we would have improved and evolved as people, and have made the world around us a better place.

Change Is The Most Natural Thing In The World

by Elaine Abonal September 12, 2016

It’s funny how we are told that people are naturally resistant to change, whereas the most natural thing in the world IS change. These past few months have all been about change for me and although in my brain I know it, my heart doesn’t seem to be ready. Until now, where I have taken a break and have been … Continue reading

As ever, I’m not sure where the past while has gone – summer definitely seems to have disappeared in the blink of an eye! I started off the trail running season on a really positive note and was ready, and very excited, to get my first ultra-race of the year ticked off nice and early in April. But, … Continue reading
